MISSION
Reinventing the energy industry
Our mission is to reduce the world’s dependence on fossil fuels starting with supporting Hawai'i’s 100% renewable portfolio standard by 2045. Makana Energy is a vertically integrated platform of affiliates:
-
Makana Energy sources and finances renewable fuel marketing, sales, and operations.
-
Hoku Kai Biofuels operates physical assets storing and distributing biofuels in Hawai’i.
-
Green Crude looks to replace traditional petroleum crude oil.
We are blessed with the opportunity to live and raise our family in Hawai’i. We want to give back to the 'aina by fostering Hawaiian energy independence, while keeping and developing our brightest local talent through proving and deploying new renewable technologies that can be used around the world.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Low Carbon Future
Hawai'i was one of the first states to enact a carbon-neutral mandate. To achieve the 2045 target, broad deployments of low carbon fuels are mission critical.
-
Hawaiian Focus: If we can prove this model in Hawai'i, it can be achieved anywhere.
-
Energy Security: Low carbon solutions deployed here in Hawai'i result in energy security for Hawai'i and its residents.
-
Jobs Now and For the Future: Energy self-sustainability results in not just keeping jobs on island, but in growing opportunities for Hawaiians and future generations.
-
Strengths and Challenges: Hawai'i has a complex mix of strengths and challenges. Hawai'i is blessed with the assets to enable the transition but our remoteness represents an obstacle to complete the transition.
-
Energy Needs: Hawai'i needs a mix of energy solutions to create electricity to power our homes, businesses, and vehicles; to fuel the aviation (tourism) industry; and to power on-road fuels (particularly for trucks and heavy equipment contributing to growth).
RELIABLE FIRM ENERGY
Firm Energy is Key to Hawai'i’s Low Carbon Future
Hawai’i needs energy from a variety of renewable sources. Wind, solar and battery storage are only part of the solution. Makana believes that consistent reliable energy, from sources like renewable fuels, will be a key factor in the low carbon transition. Makana is pioneering the use of biomass waste residue streams to create sustainable fuels. Today these fuels are being used to power cars, trucks, farm and heavy equipment. Soon these fuels will enable the local production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). By developing and investing in critical renewable infrastructure now, Makana creates new jobs and more abundant energy resources for Hawai'i’s future.
